Code Together, Grow Together
Marymount University
How they used Delve
Two education researchers at Marymount University, a doctoral student and her faculty mentor, coded interview transcripts together in Delve as the worked example of a collaborative, reflexivity-building approach to qualitative analysis in an IGI Global chapter for educational-leadership doctoral students.
“I was unfamiliar with Delve software before my work with Jenn. After coding participant 1's [...] transcripts (P2, P3, P4, and P5) using Delve software. See Appendix G for a sample of Jenn's [...]”
- Field
- educational leadership doctoral training; qualitative methods pedagogy
- Data
- Interview transcripts from five participants (P1 to P5), coded by the doctoral student with her mentor; a sample of the mentor's coding is reproduced in Appendix G
- Approach
- Collaborative coding model for doctoral students (student and mentor coding the same transcripts to build reflexivity); analytic approach beyond that is behind the IGI Global paywall
- Data types

Abstract
This chapter provides doctoral students with a student-centered, collaborative model for engaging in qualitative data analysis. The purpose of this chapter is to demystify the processes of coding, codebook development, and theme generation by situating them within the lived experience of a dissertation-in-practice. Through examples drawn from data analysis, the chapter illustrates how first- and second-cycle coding, iterative refinement, and collaborative memoing foster deeper analytic understanding. Attention is given to the importance of reflexivity, positionality, and trustworthiness in guiding methodological choices and ensuring rigor. Practical strategies, such as KWL charts, reflective journaling, and integrating hand-coding with digital software, are presented as scaffolds to support doctoral students in building confidence and competence. By blending conceptual grounding with applied practice, this chapter provides a roadmap that guides students from uncertainty to agency in conducting meaningful qualitative research.
